“Gold Star Staff” member Marco Perez-Zanelli isn’t your typical college student. Marco attends Florida Gulf Coast University full time where has a minor in Biology and majors in Exercise science; but he’s not stopping there. Once he graduates with his bachelor’s degree he plans on pursuing either a doctorate in Physical Therapy or a master’s in Health Administration. Marco is passionate about what he does; he works as the Lab Coordinator for the Neighborhood Health Clinic most clinic days and also works as a personal trainer for Fitness Together. He tries to squeeze in some time for fishing on occasion.
Marco’s role at the Neighborhood Health Clinic has changed over time. He recalls walking through the halls of the Clinic for the first time thinking, “Man, I want to be a part of this.” And become a part of the Clinic family is what he did. He began volunteering his time as an interpreter, but was soon intrigued by the lab. Marco requested an assignment in the lab and found his niche. He participated in the Clinic’s Colon Cancer study by doing data entry; he performed EKGs and ran tests. When the previous Lab Coordinator left Marco smoothly transitioned from volunteer to staff member. He is very appreciative of the Lab team, “They are people of good character and you can count on them to do what they say they will do.” He speaks highly of other staff and volunteers as well. “It’s a great place. We help people who really need it. We see success in our patients day by day. You help someone and you see the results immediately. It’s an ideal place for someone in the medical field to volunteer; people who have a passion to make a difference in people’s lives and follow the humanitarian ideal. Our doctors and nurses provide quality care; every single person wants to be here.”
The passion and devotion Marco has to the Clinic is apparent. He wants to have a huge impact on our future. He envisions growth and positive change. Marco calls himself a philanthropist and a humanitarian. When asked about his goals he replied, “I will do anything I can do to give back to our community and serve those that are in need. Why wait when you can do it now?” Marco wants to continue the legacy created by our co-founders, Dr. William and Nancy Lascheid.
