“Working in the ER I see so many patients who don’t seem to care about their health.  It is different at the Clinic.  The patients here don’t take anything for granted.  They take an active role in their health,” said Ms. Piccaluga.

Ms. Piccaluga was born in Europe and moved to Naples when she was in high school.  Her first job in the “medical” field was working after school at the Glenview.  Then she went to college and received her degree in Business Administration.  After graduation she moved to New York City but it wasn’t long before she realized she wanted a career in medicine. “It was all those memories of working at the Glenview.  I just knew I wanted to help people,” remembers Ms. Piccaluga.  So she went back to the University of Florida and three years ago began working as an Emergency Room nurse at Health Park.

She was introduced to the Neighborhood Health Clinic when she participated in a CPR class offered at the Clinic.  “I was so impressed with how comprehensive the care is.  The Clinic doesn’t just provide for the patients’ medical needs but also offers educational programs as well.”  Ms. Piccaluga is also impressed with the community support and cooperation.  She is passionate about introducing the organization to her colleagues.

“The luncheon at the Naples Yacht Club was well received. The ladies were welcomed with a glass of prosecco and a lobster salad was served”, said Lydia Smith, Secretary.  “It was a wonderful way to welcome new members and introduce new friends to the outstanding work being done at the Clinic.”

The Guild for the Neighborhood Health Clinic was formed to raise friends and funds to support patient services.  A check for $7,000 was presented at the luncheon to Nina Gray, CEO, and will be utilized to purchase equipment and supplies for the Clinic’s surgical room where outpatient surgical procedures are performed.

The Guild formed in October 2011 when Jane Scholtz and Joy Dillon met to discuss the need for more visibility for the Neighborhood Health Clinic.  From that first meeting, a membership recruitment luncheon was held in January and then the end-of-year event.  The Guild raised a total of $10,000 in only three months and will continue to recruit friends and funds.  For more information about the Guild, please contact Chris Brick at 239.250.8416 or ctbrick@embarqmail.com.

Each Monday and Thursday physicians, nurses and other volunteers convene for “Clinic Night”.  After a long day in their offices, 30 or so dedicated physicians and nurses come together to provide care and treatment pro bono for those low-income working adults who have no medical insurance.

Bonnie Yarrington is the Monday night kitchen volunteer, keeping the food hot, serving drinks and cleaning up.  Meals are usually donated by an organization, church, or local restaurant.  But sometimes she does the cooking herself.  It is thanks to Mrs. Yarrington that the Moorings Park kitchen caters a meal once a month.  We have an additional need for meals during the summer when some of our cooking groups are away.

Supper is served in the small kitchen where all of the volunteers gather around for food and conversation.  This is a time of socializing for these professionals who have very little opportunity to do so because of the demands of their day jobs.  “The energy and enthusiasm of these wonderful people affects everyone, patients, volunteers and each other!  It’s very, very special.  And it’s the best dinner party I go to!” says Mrs. Yarrington.

Pam Cardec

Please join us in congratulating Pam Cardec who has been promoted to Neighborhood Health Clinic Director of Operations.  In this capacity, Ms Cardec will be the full time employee responsible for oversight of all specialty programs and will support the coordinators and their volunteer teams.  As we move towards our goal of outcome measures for each program, Ms Cardec will work to identify the necessary data to collect and enter into the patient database while assuring the methodology is accurate in order to extrapolate data for grant writing and outcome studies.

This is an exciting time for the Neighborhood Health Clinic as we continue to grow because of our patient-driven mission.  Thank you all for the support and commitment to our incredible organization.
